In times of Bereavement

We understand that things can seem overwhelming during this very difficult time and we want to assure you that we are with you every step of the way.

The NHS has a clearly defined process which needs to be adhered to after a death.

As soon as the death has been verified, it is reported to the Somerset Medical Examiners Office.  This team of senior NHS doctors work independently of GP practices to ensure the cause of death is recorded accurately and the death itself is lawfully certified.

They will also contact the bereaved family to check if there are any questions or concerns.  This is a routine discussion and does not indicate that anything is amiss.

Sometimes, a death will need to be referred to the Coroner, for example if the death was sudden or unexpected.  In these cases, the Coroner will decide the next steps, and the Somerset Medical Examiner will explain why.

The Somerset Medical Examiners office will then pass on their findings to the Registration Office, allowing the family to register the death and collect the Certified Death Certificate.  Funeral arrangements can only be made once this has happened.

Please remember that bereavement can affect people in different ways, and support is available.  For more information, see NHS - Get help with grief after bereavement or loss.  Alternatively, you can contact us via the NHS  App, by submitting an online for from our website, or call us on 01749 672 137.
